Nine High

Your Guide to Grade Nine!

Science & Socials 9

The reason why I put these two classes together is because they are similar - lots of textbook work, and projects.

In the BC Science 9 textbooks, the four topics it covers are: Chemistry, Electricity, Reproduction, and Space Exploration. In Socials, the units I've covered are: French, English, and Industrial Revolutions, Native Peoples of Canada, & English Explorers.

Science

Science is what I like to call a "Textbook Subject." 99% of the work comes from the textbook, and there are a few projects along the way. For chemistry, for example, we did little experiments, such as "The Jumping Raisin Experiment." Then, in electricity, we had to make a circuit board game, using wires to somehow make a light go on in a game. Many people did questionnaires. However, one group did a version of "Operation" on Frankenstein, and I did a miniature hockey idea! The possibilities were endless! It is also cheap too! We used: Copper wire, lights, AA Battery, and a battery holder! Then, for Space Exploration, we did posters with 10 facts from each planet, and pictures. Every group of 2 was assigned a planet, dwarf planet, and a couple other things! That's all we've done so far!

Socials

Socials is also a "Textbook Subject." Lots of written work and tests! In our class, we play some vocabulary games to prepare for tests, and have review sheets for tests, but other than that, we do the odd project. Here is a website I made for a Socials project on Native Canadians.

Project Ideas

Okay, now I love to websites for projects for two reasons:

  1. It is something that I am good at and enjoy to do
  2. It is extremely easy to organize!

But, also, posterboard projects are always a good idea! Check the blog for more details, and submit your ideas in the forum! Remember to choose a project you enjoy!

Study Tips

  • Vocabulary flash cards! It helps a lot for understanding the vocabulary and knowing what each word means.
Just write down the word on one side and the definition on the other side!
  • T-Chart Vocab list. Make a "t-chart" and fold it in between the word and the definition. Fold over one side, then try to remember what the definition is!
