Your Guide to Grade Nine!

Math 9

Math 9 contains a lot of the similar math covered in grade 8, just harder - Geometry, Fractions, Algebra, & Powers, but now with Trigonometry. As the year goes along, it gradually gets more difficult, until you reach the end of the year. If you need help, click on the topic you need help with. If the topic is not there, please go to the forums for Math and submit your topic! Unfortunately, I haven't learned or Geometry this year yet, but, as soon as I learn about them, I will update math! Also, I am working on getting fractions and powers done!

Algebra

Algebra is a wide spread unit, but it narrows down to the basics of math operations. In algebra, up until grade 9, it's always been =. In grade 9, however, they decided to add inequalties, which are > (greater than), and < (less than.) But that's not where it stops, two other signs are ≥ (greater than or equal to), and ≤ (less than or equal to.) The operations are the same. For example:

There also can be fractions in algebra. There is one different cheat, and that is if every denominator is the same, then you can cross them out. Just follow the rules above (except, don't try flipping an equals sign, it looks like the same) and work hard!

Powers

Powers are really easy. Once you get it, you get it! Here are the basic rules:

Exponents are the shortened form of multiplying a number that amount of times:
2*2*2*2 = 24

Q: (-3)5
A:
This is the same as (-3) * (-3) * (-3) * (-3) * (-3). The - sign is really a -1. If the question was (-3 * 9)5, it is the same as (-3 * 9)*(-3 * 9)*(-3 * 9)*(-3 * 9)*(-3 * 9). You put the exponent on everything inside the bracket so the question is actually: (-3)5 * 95

Q: 35 * 34
A: When you are multiplying, you ADD the exponents. The answer is Q: 39

Q: 35 ÷ 34
A: When you are dividing, you SUBTRACT the exponents. The answer is Q: 31

Q: (35)4
A: When you have the following question, you MULTIPLY the 2 exponents. The answer is Q: 320

Q: -35
A:
If the question has a '-' IN FRONT of the number with the exponent WITHOUT a bracket, treat the '-' like it is MULTIPLYING number ATTACHED to the exponent (in this case, the 3). ONLY do 35, and your answer will be a negative (in this case, the answer is -81)

 Hope this helps!

Trigonometry

So far, I'll I've learned is trigonometry for right triangles! A key word to remember is SOHCAHTOA. What does it stand for?
Sine (Sin)
Opposite
Hypotenuse
Cosine (Cos)
Adjacent
Hypotenuse
Tangent (Tan)
Opposite
Adjacent

But, how does it help us?

Sine (Sin) =      Cosine (Cos) =     Tangent (Tan) =
Opposite ÷         Adjacent ÷             Opposite ÷
Hypotenuse       Hypotenuse           Adjacent

Yeah, that may sound fancy, but it helps us know what the length of a side of a triangle is when we only have 1 angle and an angle OTHER THAN 90 Degrees.

Example:

One thing is for certain in trigonometry, you must have a scientific calculator!
