Nine High

Your Guide to Grade Nine!

French 9

In French 9, we learned from the textbook Ça Marche! 2. The units my class covered were: Mon style, ma mode; Mordu du sport! and Musique-maina! There are also 3 other units in the textbook: L'école de l'avenir; Adventures en plein air and Action jeunesse. We also learned le passé composé (Past tense), le futur proche (Future Tense), le comparatif (Comparisons), and le superlatif (Greater than, less than). Feel free to use the translator for phrases or single words only.

Le Passé Composé

In passé composé, there are regular and irregular verbs. For most regular verbs, you follow this rule:

Correctly conjugated form of avoir + the 2nd verb, in this form: -er → é, -ir → i, -re → u.

However, there are 16 irregular verbs, called the Mrs. Dr. Vandertramp verbs. They are followed by the base of their conjugated form:

Monter - monté
Rester - resté
Sortir - sorti

Devenir - devenu
Revenir - revenu

Venir - venu
Aller - allé
Naître - né
Descendre - descendu
Entrer - entré
Rentrer - Rentré
Tomber - tombé
Retourner - retourné
Arriver - arrivé
Mourir - mort
Partir - parti

These verbs go with the correctly conjugated verb être, but they also have endings depening on who you are talking about (in brackets is the feminim form):

Example (using naître)
Je suis né(e)
Tu es né(e)
Il est né
Elle est née
Nous sommes né(e)s
Vous êtes né(e)s
Ils sont nés
Elles sont nées

For a tip on how to remember verbs are Vandertramp verbs, write a song with them. Our class did some to the alphabet, "Hey There Delilah," and even "Never Gonna Give You Up."

Le futur proche

For futur proche use the conjugated verb aller in front of the regular form of the verb. For example:
Je vais aller.

That's all you need to know for futur proche!
