From Short Stories to Spelling and Grammar, English 9 is a very important course, and will provide you with many essential tools needed to get through the rest of your education career.
Hey! I know that this is everyone's favourite topic. Below are some tips I have got from my English teacher. Grammar ones are soon to follow!
Rule #1: "I before E except after C"
Tip: Just remember the catchphrase, it does wonders when you are spelling receive and friend!
Exceptions: There are some exceptions to this rule, here are a few of them: seize, weird, either, height, foreign, leisureRule #2: Drop the silent "e" at the end of a word when adding a suffix that starts with a vowel
Tip: Two vowels don't mix when your adding a suffix.
Examples: Move → movable; remove →removingRule #3: When adding "s" or "ed" to words ending in "y, change the "y" to an i Examples: Comedy → comedies; dry → dried
Exception: Don't change the spelling of proper names ending in a "y" when adding an ending
Rule #4: Adding a suffix, such as "ing", to a word like bet
Tip: If it ends in a single consonant, add the last letter agian
Examples: Bet → betting; occur → occurring
Rule #5: Plurals
Tips: If it ends in an "f" change it to a "ves"; if it ends in a vowel or single consonant, add an "s"; if it ends in "s", "sh", "ch", or "x", add "es".
Examples: Wolf → wolves; tree → trees, tank → tanks; church → churches, fox → foxes
